Bullmastiffs are gentle dogs with an alert and lively expression. They had a variety of uses in the past and retain some of their functions up to our days. These short-coated dogs are not troublesome to take care of. In the early years of the breed's history the preferred coat color was brindle. It helped the dog to perform its original function - guarding estates at night. Nowadays, red and fawn colored Bullmastiffs enjoy the most popularity. Bullmastiffs are predisposed to gastric torsion, CHD, entropion, elbow dysplasia, and some other minor disorders. A number of diseases are congenital. Therefore, it is recommended to buy Bullmastiffs with pedigrees.

Bullmastiffs are large dogs. Any large dog breed can be predisposed to hip dysplasia. Both parents and puppies from the litter should be screened for this disease. "Cherry eye" and entropia are the two eye problems in Bullmastiffs. The symptoms of entropia are puffy eyes and eyes that look half closed. These eye diseases can be corrected with surgery. Among other diseases that are sometimes mentioned in connection with the Bullmastiff breed, hypo-thyroidism and OCD (osteochondritis dissecans) in the elbow are the most common.

Renal failure can be found in Bullmastiffs. This disease is due to the hypo-thyroid condition in dogs. On the whole, Bullmastiffs are rather healthy dogs and if you buy a puppy from a reputable breeder, you are sure to get the necessary evidence of the pup's perfect health.
