Bull Mastiff Pup

A Bull Mastiff pup is very attractive and cute. Its playful personality and funny looks make people buy a pet of this breed without thinking about their life with a large and very strong dog. At 2 months of age, rambunctious Bull Mastiff puppies don’t cause any problems, because they are small, but at the age of 6-8 months, they almost reach their full size and may be destructive. Adult dogs reach the size of 24-26 inches at the withers and around 150 pounds in weight. They are normally calm and quiet, but they need mush space indoors.

That’s why it’s important to socialize a Bull Mastiff pup as soon as possible. Professional obedience training is a must for every Bull Mastiff pup, even if you are not going to show it. Bull Mastiffs are self-assured and self-confident. They should be shown from the very beginning who the boss is; otherwise these powerful dogs will be dominant, stubborn, manipulating, and difficult to live with. Bad behavior because of lack of firm training is the main reason for surrendering Bull Mastiffs and other large and strong dogs to rescues.

Prior to purchasing a Bull Mastiff pup, a responsible owner learns much on the breed: its keeping requirements, exercise needs, personality, typical behavior and health problems. An unknowledgeable owner cannot understand the temperament of a powerful and self-assured dog and will not form close bonds with it.

Typical hereditary health problems in Bull Mastiffs are ectropion, cancer, and heart disorders. Like all large dogs, Bull Mastiffs are prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, bloat, and gastric torsion. The lifespan of this breed is not long. The quality of a purebred dog depends both on the owner and the breeder. Even if you are a skillful dog owner able to socialize and train a large dog, you may face various problems, if the dog was produced by an irresponsible profit-oriented breeder. Only true breed fanciers care for the improvement of the breed in general and do everything possible to produce healthy puppies. They screen the breeding stock for typical genetic disorders and cull defective animals. A Bull Mastiff pup bought from a responsible breeder has a good potential.
